Through the on-going counseling that KCCC gives to children and youth in the community, they have been able to make responsible life choices and deal with challenging situations in life. For example boys and girls have decided to delay sex and are concentrating on their studies. Some have stopped abusing alcohol and drugs, which has reduced their vulnerability to HIV infection and mental illness. Counseling has also enabled parents/guardians handle children with delinquent behavior. For example former Street children have been able to return home and they are re-united with their families, parents have been counseled on how to detect and deal with children who are developing delinquent behavior. Thus the child welfare and development program has strengthened the capacities of families to bring up children responsibly.
- By the end of September 2007 with the support of various development partners, KCCC in addition to the children at Sr. Miriam Duggan was sponsoring 2,271 orphans and vulnerable children for primary, secondary and university education. For these children, access to education improves their lives; provides them with better opportunities for leading full, secure and healthy lives. It also contributes to the social and economic well-being and security of communities by reducing poverty, increasing labour productivity, and improving their health so that they can fully participate in their economies, in the development and maintenance of their societies. In past 5 years, 236 OVC sponsored under this arrangement have graduated from institutions of higher learning. Some of these have returned to serve KCCC as social workers, teachers, pharmacists, and community development volunteers.
- Since 1989, 995 partial and full-time street children have been rehabilitated and resettled. Families and communities have also been sensitized about the causes and effects of children taking to the streets. In 2000, a government crackdown on children on Kampala streets found no children from Kamwokya parish where most of KCCC's activities are concentrated. This showed that KCCC was making significant contribution in handling factors that force children on the streets. It also affirmed KCCC's commitment to protecting the rights of children.
