In 1989 an economical concept was developed as a strategy to mitigate HIV/AIDS, supporting families that were affected and infected by HIV/AIDS. The scheme initially started as a small component with the bigger Kamwokya Christian Caring Community (KCCC) HIV/AIDs psychosocial support to people infected and affected with the pandemic. Unlike today during that time the scheme used to give out grants, after sometime we realized that we could not sustain this kind of approach. Its then that we decided to form those members into groups to promote economic and social interests of the vulnerable poor in the low resourced communities
Objectives
- To promote a saving culture among community members to facilitate development
- To provide loan/credit facilities to members at affordable and user friendly interest rates to encourage re-investment
- To enhance people's capacity to prevent and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS in the community
Achievements
- By the end of October 2007 a cumulative total of 3250 Individuals (1024 males, 2226 females) from indigent and AIDS-affected families/households had accessed credit through the KCCC cooperative and savings society (SACCO). Most of the loan beneficiaries are widows/widowers, PLHAs and grandmothers that are supporting 4- 5 dependants, signifying that about 13, 000 household members indirectly benefit from SACCO activities. Loans beneficiaries establish successful businesses, save with the cooperative society and use some of the resources generated to meet their family's needs such as feeding, shelter and school fees for their dependent children.
