Primary School

KCCC PRIMARY SCHOOL - SR. DR. MIRIAM DUGGAN PRIMARY SCHOOL

Since its inception, the school has educated over 2000 severely disadvantaged children in Kamwokya II Parish, Kampala, enabling them to hope for a future different from that of their backround. Many of the school's alumni have gone on to secondary schools, with more than a few continuing on to university level. Today we have alumni in medicine, teaching, pharmacy, social work, law, business administration, banking, hotel management, engineering and community development. Upon graduation some of them come back to teach at the school or volunteer in KCCC's other programs in their spare time.

Our Mission and Our History

Today, KCCC Sr Dr Miriam Duggan Primary school has a total number of 520 pupils in grades Primary 1 - 7. These students are classified as follows:

    1. Complete orphans - children who have lost both parents (20% of total population).
    2. Partial orphans - children who have lost one parent (60%).
    3. Needy children - children who come from very needy families (15%).
    4. Self sponsored children - children whose parents can afford to pay school fees (5%).

The first three categories (OVCs) are our main target beneficiaries and the actual mission for which this school was established. The fourth category was adopted as a strategy to involve the entire community in the school and to raise funds for the school's sustainability.

Our Partners

Sr Dr Miriam Duggan Primary School has two categories of partners:
• International: Caritas Switzerland /Luxemburg, SCIAF, Global Fund Project, COOPI, Compassion Uganda, Ingistus, Emmaus Foundation, Siegi Elizabeth, and S. Fulkom .
• Local: The Family of Engineer Ssemukuutu Albert sponsors the pupil Nakkazi Lydia; KCCC, Sr. Mary Joe sponsors Nandugga Beatrice.

We have also consistently sought partnerships with schools in other countries. Through SCIAF's Project Partnership Scheme, we had a wonderfully fruitful visit from students from 4 Scottish High Schools. This partnership was coordinated by Paul Matovu from the KCCC Youth Section. We continue to seek partnerships and exchanges with schools in the USA and the UK.

Our Sustainability

Sr. Miriam Duggan School is primarily donor dependent. The generous contracts of two of our major donors end in 2008.
SCIAF
(which sponsors 235 children)
CARITA
(Which sponsors 50 children)
COOPI ( which sponsors children)

While searching for essential donor support, we have also contracted a consultant to design a business plan for the school. Four programs were identified as possible revenue-generating activities
:
1. Opening a Computer Training Laboratory and Internet Cafe for the general public;
2. Expanding the Adult Education Evening Program to "O" and "A" levels;
3. Increasing the proportion of fee-paying children at the expense of sponsored children;
4. Opening an over-nightcar park.

To date, we have opened a modest income-generating Computer Training Laboratory and have opened an Internet Cafe.

The admission of greater numbers of fee-paying pupils, which would fundamentally change the character of our mission, has been rejected. As has a car park, for reasons of pupils' safety.

Our Staff
The Teaching staff is composed of 12 members; the Support staff comprises 7 members plus a secretary. The ICT staff is composed of 2 members and the Evening Program for "O" and "A" level adult education has 9 teachers.
