KCCC VOCATIONAL TRAINING COLLEGE
KVTC's GOAL: In order to address the challenge of improving the quality of life of the vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the Kamwokya slums, KCCC Vocational Training Center has adopted a double-barrelled approach:
- We provide hands-on vocational training and Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) classes to increase employability and self-reliance to 250 community members every year;
- We strive to sensitize our trainees to the importance of family, peer group and social support networks in relation to HIV/AIDS education by on-going behaviour change seminars.
- To provide, promote and support basic educational and vocational skills, as well as Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) for indigent and orphaned children, school drop-outs and young girls in particular, complemented as financial means permit, by sponsorship/scholarship programs.Picture (above): KVTC Carpentary and Joinery class
VTC offers courses in: - Brick laying and Masonry
- Carpentry and Joinery
- Catering
- Leather working
- Tailoring
- Art and design
- Functional Adult Literacy
During their studies, the trainees have regular examinations, since we are registered with the Ministry of Education, Directorate of Industrial Training. Our courses are complemented by affiliations with local artisans. A rental tool bank has been established for graduates needing short-term logistical assistance. Financial assistance is provided through sponsorship programs.

To qualify for our programs, the interested individual as well as the concerned family members are interviewed to assess their financial and motivational backround, to discuss with the guardian (if any) how they may be of help, and to identify any psycho-social challenges the candidate may be facing.

Our trainees range in age from 15 to 24 years of age and are among the most disadvantaged members of our community (orphans, street children, drop-outs). As such, they are required to attend Education For Life seminars that address motivation and personal development: HIV/AIDS prevention, negative peer group pressure, family relations and parenting skills are among the subjects discussed.
